Driving up to a group of lions sleeping in the sun seems very unimpressive
Obviously they are entirely disinterested in our arrival
But when someone opens the door of the landcruiser......
They don't seem quite so uninterested any more....
The vast green plains of the Serengeti are quite remarkable
Every outcropping is potentially the home of a predator
Often a hungry predator
Innumerable wildebeest approach the Mara river to cross
But the wildebeest cross back and forth across the Mara river in search of green grass
Dashing headlong into the water even though they don't all make it across
The pressure from the crowd built up behind them forces them forward
The green grass is inviting, but notice the lion hiding lower right
Klipspringers are amazing small animals that walk on their tiptoes
But they can climb "smooth" rocks with ease
Even in the tiniest of crevices there's life as this elephant shrew illustrates
(some nose he's got there).
Green bee eaters hunt every stream
But despite such large areas of fertile grass all of the animals compete for local dominance
This rock hyrax was quite content to look down from the safety of the tree
But the colorful tree agama scampered away when we got close
The dwarf mongoose often were only briefly glimpsed running away
But this guy was curious enough to stick around for a few moments
The big cats find plenty to eat on the Serengeti plains and this leopard was resting quietly when spotted.
And this one was even more relaxed waiting out the heat of the day on a shady tree limb
Lions are less likely to climb trees, but this young male was certainly taking it easy in the morning sun.
This old male had been challenged by a younger pair, but he was quite sure he could tell them who was who.
In another area this younger male ruled unafraid
He seems quite secure in his status
Standing watch while the others take their turn
Back to the hard work of relaxing in the mid morning sun
Game is plentiful and hence so are lions and lion cubs
Cheetahs too are plentiful. This one has spotted a reedbuck as the sun is setting
And there are cheetah cubs as well
Genet cats are shy and rarely seen, but this one poked his head out for a few moments as we went by
Lilac breasted rollers are everywhere in the Serengeti
