The dramatic scenery of the arctic is just spectacular
The polar bears are magnificent as they stand calmly watching us watching them
They move from Ice flow to ice flow with apparent ease and nonchalance.
Curious about the occasional tourist, but often unconcerned
You and I would freeze quickly, but getting wet doesn't seem to bother them
This guy really did seem to be casually waving to us
Sniffing the air for the scent of a seal is a characteristic pose. It's said they can smell a seal "a mile away."
And if they do, they head that way in a hurry
I don't think this guy liked the idea of being followed
This guy had a recent seal kill nearby and was more interested in checking out his good looks
There wasn't anything in the water
And he didn't take a drink, so maybe he really was just looking at himself
Ivory gulls, pure white with black feet are typical of the arctic

This bear was just resting. His dirty face suggests a recent meal
It never got dark in July, but it did get dusky at times with all the clouds
The reports are the overall amount of arctic ice is decreasing, but there was plenty to see
And beautiful it was
Nobody lives on these islands. You've have water (or at least snow) and you could hunt, but there's nothing for fuel of anykind
Traveling through the ice in our "icebreaker" we had the opportunity to see many unique patterns form and disappear
