It can be pretty intense when a grizzly bear is coming right at you even when you are sure all he wants is a fish in the water.
Most people don't realize they are not too distantly related to dogs and like dogs they eat bees. Look carefully, then see the next picture.
Yup, that's a bee in his mouth.
But they do prefer salmon. More of a meal don't you think.
There are a lot of other animals in Alasaka of course. If you cruise the Kenai Fjords out of Seward you'll see otters.
Stellar Sea Lions
Lots of Puffins
And if you're lucky a humpback whale breaching.
Puffins look pretty funny when they fly
And even funnier when they take off from the water
More common than the whale breach is the humpback whale tail. A remarkable sight nonetheless.
It's not too unusual to see orca's but it's hard to catch a spy hop like this.
Inland you can see the bears fishing at Brooks Falls
If you get further off the track to one of the fly-in fishing lodges the view can be remarkable and the bears even more so.
Often you'll see bears looking for salmon along the side of the river.
Or even just pausing to take a drink.
But if you're a salmon, watch out when one spots you.
There's nothing they like more for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
"Hey are you going to eat all that yourself?" Sometimes they disagree over who gets the fish.
But more often they seem friendly toward each other like these two guys
And then the other guy said.........
It must have been a really funny joke!!
If you look carefully you can count eight bears in this picture. Right place right time there were twenty different bears fishing in this stretch of river while we were taking pictures as fast as we could.
But even here it wasn't just bears. This ptarmigan was displaying to make sure he didn't go unnoticed
The bald eagle watches over everything from his majestic perch
Even this juvenile on the nest, not quite ready to fly yet, was attentive to our every move.
And of course there are flowers in Alaska in the summer
Many different colors
